For many of us the desire to speak a language other than the one we grew up speaking is something we have little interest in. This is primarily because we don’t have a real need for that ability in our day-to-day lives. Yet, many in the world do have an interest in this type of learning because they know that it will be of benefit to them in their lives. They will have more educational and employment opportunities with more language skills. Currently, English is one of the languages that is in demand around the world. Therefore, helping people develop their English skills is a tool for ministry in many places. It is a valuable tool that we are utilizing here in Isaan. In addition to teaching English we also hold English Outreach Camps. These camps take place in various settings depending on the participants. Sometimes we hold English daycamps in a village setting for children. These camps are somewhat like VBS and they include songs, games, Bible stories, crafts and refreshments. Children have enjoyed learning in this setting – whether it be English or stories from the Bible. University students have been responsive to camps where we go away for several days and hold a camp in a retreat-like setting. Fun is always a central ingredient in these camps and we include skits, songs, games and competition. English lessons are planned around stories in the Bible and students have an opportunity to discuss their own insights and experiences related to the topics covered in small groups. Direct sharing of the gospel is done in various ways, including personal testimonies, media of different types, and worship services. Pray that through English classes and camps the hearts of Isaan students will be softened and open to the message of the gospel. Pray that as God speaks to their hearts that they will open themselves to Him.
